Your First Year as a Data Scientist

Named as the number one job of 2017 by Glassdoor, Data Science is an up-and-coming career choice for technology bootcamp graduates. But what do Data Scientists actually do in their day-to-day roles? Here's some insight into this new job opportunity.

MEETUPS, MEETUPS, MEETUPS!

If you're diving into a Data Science career head-first (which is what a bootcamp is all about), you'll want to immediately immerse yourself in the growing culture. If you're in a large metro area or city, you can find local in-person meetups. If you're a little more off the grid, check out websites like Reddit and Quora. Their forums are filled with like-minded people, and you'll surely make new connections by asking (and answering) questions.

IT'S STILL A NEW FIELD, SO YOU CAN HELP SHAPE IT

Data Scientists haven't been around for much time, so because of that, the day-to-day activities of data scientists change often. Much like any other new employment opportunity, it's more important to network and show soft skills - like proper communication, negotiation, and sympathy. According to data scientist Will Stanton, "getting a job in data science was 80 percent networking, 20 percent skills, and not the other way around."

Languages Used in Data Science

LOTS OF LANGUAGES!

Technology changes so quickly - and the languages supporting that technology need to keep up with the pace. Named as one of the top programming languages to learn in 2017, Python has prominently become the go-to language for Data Science.

But what about R? It's referred to as a little more clunky, and a lot more old-school, but R shouldn't be forgotten. It's still used in a large amount of Data Science roles.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A DATA SCIENTIST

As a Data Scientist, you'll primarily do three things:

1. Pull, clean, and organize data.

2. Apply models and filters to the data.

3. Gain intelligent ideas and insights from the data. What's hidden in the data? How can you gain knowledge from it, and apply that knowledge to further business practices and decisions?

ALWAYS KEEP LEARNING.

Just because you've found a new career doesn't mean you should put a pause on your learning. It's important to stay on top of trends and new developments, so your knowledge of your craft can be as responsive and adaptive as the spreadsheets you're building!

STAY ON TOP OF YOUR BUDGET, AS ALWAYS

A new career is so exciting - and the prospect of having extra cash flow is wonderful. It's still important to monitor your credit score and stay on top of your post-bootcamp budget, however!
